The Crown Rating System provides an objective framework for assessing dolls based on several key categories, from cultural authenticity to quality, emotional impact, and innovation. By applying this rating system, we aim to uplift and promote dolls embodying the core values of self-love, diversity, and cultural pride—critical for children and families today.

The objective of the Black Dolls Matter® Rating System

The primary objective of the Black Dolls Matter® Crown Rating System is to promote positive representation, self-love, and esteem in children of all ages. This system evaluates dolls based on their ability to celebrate and reflect diverse Black identities and highlight the importance of inclusion in the toy industry.

Key Rating Categories

Representation (30%)
- Cultural Accuracy: Does the doll authentically represent Black culture, from hairstyles and features to fashion?
- Diversity of Skin Tones: Does the doll line feature a wide range of melanated skin tones?
- Body Positivity: Are the doll’s body shapes and sizes diverse and realistic?
Quality (25%)
- Materials: Are the materials safe, durable, and of high quality?
- Artistry: Are the doll’s features (facial sculpt, hair texture) crafted with attention to detail and realism?
- Longevity: Does the doll hold up to regular play without significant wear and tear?
Cultural Impact (20%)
- Educational Value: Does the doll include a story, accessories, or background that educates about Black history, culture, or values?
- Emotional Connection: Does the doll inspire pride, joy, and positive self-esteem in Black children?
Inclusivity (15%)
- Gender Representation: Does the doll line include Black male and non-binary dolls?
- Accessibility: Are the dolls reasonably priced and widely available to consumers?
Innovation (10%)
- Uniqueness: Does the doll bring something fresh or groundbreaking to the toy industry?
- Sustainability: Does the doll incorporate eco-friendly materials or ethical production practices?

Rating Process

Selection:
- A diverse panel of reviewers, including educators, parents, children, and enthusiasts, will evaluate dolls based on their cultural and artistic impact.
- Dolls and brands will be selected for review based on nominations, market presence, or brand partnerships.
Evaluation:
- Dolls are assessed based on the criteria within each category.
