The Constitution
of
Black Dolls Matter® Asé
The Black Dolls Matter® Asé Constitution establishes the Covenant of Care that guides our community, craft, and generational stewardship.
Revealed to those who enter in care.
The Preamble
We gather in stewardship.
We enter in dignity.
We hold memory as sacred inheritance.
Black dolls are not commodities.
They are vessels of culture, imagination, and responsibility.
This Circle exists to protect what has been overlooked,
to build what has been denied,
and to carry forward what was always ours.
Care is infrastructure.
Joy is resistance.
Asé.
The Founder in Changing Times
I do not build for a single moment.
I build in the power of now, for generations unseen.
Times will change.
Technologies will shift.
Economies will rise and fall.
But stewardship does not expire.
If you read this in a different decade,
know that the work remains the same:
Protect dignity.
Honor craft.
Build what lasts.
— Mark Ruffin, Founding Steward
On the Meaning of the Black Dolls Matter® Asé Constitution
The Black Dolls Matter® Asé Constitution is not a policy document or a list of rules. It is a living agreement rooted in care, stewardship, and generational responsibility. It exists to protect dignity, honor craft, and preserve memory in a world that often treats culture as disposable.
This Constitution affirms that Black dolls are not commodities. They are vessels of imagination, history, and cultural continuity. Every doll carries a story — of hands that made it, of children who hold it, and of futures shaped through play, reflection, and belonging.
The Covenant of Care establishes how we move within this space. To enter is to agree that joy is not passive, care is not optional, and stewardship does not expire. Members of this Circle understand that representation matters not only in what is seen, but in how it is held, shared, and protected.
As technologies shift and economies rise and fall, the principles outlined here remain constant. We build for generations unseen. We design with intention.
We choose dignity over convenience and legacy over speed.
